Nurses, of course, work closely with doctors in patient care. Registered nurses can do everything from provide comfort to give prescribed medicine. It can be a high-stress profession, so it requires professionals who can handle pressure, irregular hours and dedication.

But if you want to go the next step to obtaining an online PhD in nursing you can earn senior management nursing positions, teach at the college level, or become a nurse practitioner. A nurse pratictioner makes $74,000 a year on average.
But those aren’t the only possible career choices someone who has earned an online PhD in nursing can choose from. There are many different doctorate degrees available in nursing. Along with a nurse practitioner, some of the specialties include:
- Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, who is licensed to administer anesthesia to patients.
- Clinical Nurse Specialist, who specializes in a particular area of medicine (such as cardiology, pediatrics, or mental health).
- Certified Nurse Midwife, who has expertise in birth and nursing.
