Last week a friend of mine had asked, “Can I earn my nursing degree online?” (Apparently I’m now the “go-to” person for online education, which I don’t mind at all!) I was happy to inform her of my good news that yes, you can earn your nursing degree. She was attending classes in a traditional campus setting for biology, but she found her calling last year when her mother was in the hospital for some major surgery.
She had the opportunity to speak with many nurses who were on staff, and while she enjoyed biology quite a bit, she found her heart was into nursing. She wasn’t sure what degree she wanted to earn, what type of nursing she wanted to do, but was willing to explore her options, especially if the courses could be taken online.

There are several types of nurses and nursing programs you can take. If you want to shorten your education as much as possible, you can take a course to become a certified nursing assistant (CNA), which is a good step to becoming a Registered Nurse (RN) or Nurse Practitioner (NP). Becoming an RN or NP requires at least a 2-year associates degree in nursing. If you wish to advance your knowledge of nursing, you can choose to then take a bridge program from an RN to a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. Should you decide that you want to take it to the next level, there is also a masters degree in nursing (MSN).
No matter which degree or nursing career you choose, you can take courses online. Online degree programs offer a lot more flexibility in when and where you can ‘attend class’, which makes it a great opportunity for working adults to get a degree. There are also opportunities for accelerated degrees, allowing you to finish your 2 or 4 year degree in less time. That would allow me to earn my nursing degree online faster and then I can get certified sooner!
